Every one of our 25 kindergartens has its own unique traditions, experiences and ways of helping tamariki learn, grow and thrive. We're sharing stories from our centres to celebrate the people, places and programmes that make each one special.
This week, we're visiting Portland Kindergarten, where fire pit day has become a much-loved weekly tradition. Kaiako Matua (Head Teacher) Tracy Maher shares how the ritual can spark confidence, connection and a whole lot of learning.
At Portland Kindergarten, fire pit day is one of the highlights of the week.
Held on Thursdays during Terms 2 and 3 (weather permitting), it’s a day that our tamariki look forward to – it’s not unusual to hear children asking, “Is it fire pit day today?” as soon as they arrive!
The morning starts by making bread dough, with tamariki helping to prepare and shape their own pieces ready for cooking. When it’s time to head outside, children carefully follow the fire pit rules, patiently waiting for their turn, showing care around the fire, and taking pride in cooking their own bread.
Once their bread is ready, tamariki choose their favourite topping, either butter and jam or marmite, and enjoy the yummy results of their hard work.
While the bread is a special part of the experience, there is so much more learning happening around the fire.
Fire pit day gives tamariki the opportunity to develop important skills in a fun and meaningful way.
At Portland Kindergarten, fire pit day is a much-loved part of kindergarten life. It’s a place for tamariki to connect with each other, spend time outdoors and learn through curiosity, connection and fun.
