Kia ora,

As you may have seen in the news, several sand products are currently being recalled after samples tested positive for tremolite asbestos.

Please be assured that we are working closely with the Ministry of Education, WorkSafe, and a certified asbestos management company to ensure the health and safety of our kindergarten community. This situation is evolving, and we will continue to update you as new information becomes available.

So far, NKA's response has been managed by a professional, certified asbestos removal and management company. Any of the identified sand has been removed and is now being tested. In line with updated guidance from the Ministry of Education received yesterday, the certified asbestos team is completing a thorough clean and vacuum of areas where the sand may have been used. The certified asbestos team has confirmed that these measures will ensure the safety of our kindergarten whānau while we await test results.

Importantly, respirable asbestos has not been detected in any tested samples. The release of respirable asbestos fibres is highly unlikely in its current state, and the risk of airborne fibres that could be inhaled remains very low.

We will keep you informed as we learn more.
